Surviving Suicide is a six-episode series that looks into the stories of six unique individuals who all have something in common. They were impacted by suicide. Whether fighting their own mental health battles or grieving through the loss of a loved one, they now choose to turn these struggles into strength and embark on a mission to help others in their mental health journies.

Summary

Season 1 Episode 1: Military PTSD and 9/11 Survivor

Cliff Bauman is a veteran who was stationed in Washington, DC, near the Pentagon on 9/11. He was involved in the rescue mission there, which led to an ongoing depression that culminated in a suicide attempt.

Season 1 Episode 2:  Teenager and Entrepreneur

Amanda Southworth is many things: a teenager, an entrepreneur, and a suicide survivor. Her amazing story includes founding a company that uses tech-based solutions to help people of all ages with their mental health challenges.

Season 1 Episode 3: Photographer and Suicide Survivor

Dese’Rae Stage is a photographer and suicide survivor. She travels the country interviewing and photographing fellow suicide survivors. The result is the online collection Live Through This, which has become an important tool in the suicidology community.

Season 1 Episode 4: Lost her Brother to suicide

Sally Spencer-Thomas lost her brother Carson to suicide nearly two decades ago. As a licensed counselor, she holds her brother’s memory close to her heart as she counsels men on the techniques of opening their hearts and understanding their battles with depression.

Season 1 Episode 5: Gift of Music

Nancy Nettles’s lowest point came when she was a single mom living out of her car, and she sent the kids to their father’s house so she could kill herself on her birthday. Miraculously, she survived. Now, she uses her gift of music to help understand that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

Season 1 Episode 6: Sister Honors Brother

When she was in college, Alison Malmon’s brother took his own life. From the depths of her grief, she started Active Minds, now the leading mental health organization for college students in America. From its humble beginnings, Active Minds now boasts nearly 600 chapters worldwide.
